Mechanical Engineer - Structural

Department: Engineering

Reports to (Title): Manager, Drafting

PURPOSE OF POSITION:

  • Responsible for all mechanical and packaging activities related to the hybrid locomotive and other Railpower products
  • Create and manage all new product information including pertinent engineering data

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Create and manage all new product information including models, drawings, bills of material, and all other pertinent engineering data
  • Ensure that engineering design changes are incorporated into the manufacturing process
  • Research and design all mechanical structure and packing requirements and their placement, including specific client options, on all Railpower products
  • Undertake the design of sheet metal parts and fabrications
  • Prepare all designs to assist Manufacturing with tooling and preparation for new products
  • Research/recommend improvements to overall structural design of Railpower products
  • Create, analyze, and redesign 3-D solid models for new product development to support both engineering and manufacturing processes
  • Alter/change designs on an ongoing basis to assist in improving productivity of manufacturing processes and improve the operational effectiveness of each unit
  • Act as engineering liaison for customer engineering departments as well as providing design and technical feedback to vendors and suppliers

DUTIES:

  • Provide an estimate of product cost to assist account executives finalize final pricing of potential sales to interested clients
  • Ensure that all mechanical structure design work is FRA compliant; maintain currency with regards to any changes to mechanical structure regulations regarding locomotives
  • Maintain accurate records of all designs and changes and ensure that each design is properly signed off and approved
  • Supply manufacturing and field service personnel with necessary detail and instructions to successfully carry out product modifications
  • Undertake Finite Element Analysis
  • Utilize and manipulate existing 3-D solid models to support both engineering and manufacturing processes
  • Understand and make best use of engineering automation and productivity tools to reduce the time needed to complete the designs and to facilitate the design of a more efficient locomotive with improvements to Railpower desired margins
  • Ability to create and present design reviews

QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS (minimum qualifications required; experience (years); list specific skill set needed)

  • BS Mechanical Engineering (preferred) or Mechanical Engineering Technology degree
  • 3-5 years mechanical structures design/manufacturing experience, preferably in rail or equivalent heavy industry with accountability for final mechanical systems
  • Strong computer skills and working knowledge of CAD systems (AutoCAD, Inventor)
  • Quality training preferred
  • Accurate, attentive to detail, well organized and with strong communication and leadershipskills
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision but to tight deadlines
  • Ability to create and present PowerPoint presentations
